Spectre Review

Spectre (Rated PG-13)
A cryptic message from the past sends James Bond on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia Sciarra (Monica Bellucci), the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation known as SPECTRE.

Meanwhile back in London, Max Denbigh (Andrew Scott), the new head of the Centre for National Security, questions Bond’s actions and challenges the relevance of MI6, led by M (Ralph Fiennes). Bond covertly enlists Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) and Q (Ben Whishaw) to help him seek out Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), the daughter of his old nemesis Mr White (Jesper Christensen), who may hold the clue to untangling the web of SPECTRE. As the daughter of an assassin, she understands Bond in a way most others cannot.

As Bond ventures towards the heart of SPECTRE, he learns of a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks, played by Christoph Waltz.

Spectre begins with a trademark action sequence in Mexico City where Bond follows a few guys, kills two of them, blows up a building, chases the survivor through a Day of the Dead celebration, and engages him in combat aboard a flying helicopter. The helicopter scene is dizzying and thrilling. 007 inevitably survives, and in the process, takes the dead man's octopus ring.

Bond gets heat from the new M, Ralph Fiennes, who is in turn getting heat from the head of the Joint Intelligence Service that wants to do away with the double 0 department and implement an intelligence sharing agreement among nine countries. Bond, following secret orders from beyond the grave, ignores M's commands to stay in London and instead attends the funeral of the deceased ring owner in Rome.

007 learns of a meeting that will take place that night and he flashes the ring to gain entrance. There we see the head of the organization, Franz Oberhauser (Cristoph Waltz) who has an intriguing old connection to Bond.

And speaking of connection - this movie deals with a lot of connections. There are connections to the old Bond movies through, among other things, a classic villain. There are also connections to the past three Daniel Craig-era movies, and Spectre tries to tie them all together. Admittedly, it got a little confusing (Note: a mini movie marathon of Craig's previous Bond movies may help in watching Spectre - especially if it's been a while since you've watched those movies).

There were some good performances in Spectre. Besides Craig, I enjoyed Ben Whishaw who returns as Q, and Lea Seydoux who plays Dr. Madeline Swann, the newest Bond girl. On the other hand, Cristoph Waltz, just didn't seem to live up to the high bar that's expected of Bond super villains (although his methods of torture did make me cringe I my seat).

Overall, Spectre was a good movie, but I personally enjoyed Craig's previous Bond movies much more.

Bridge of Spies Review

Bridge of Spies (Rated PG-13) Synposis:
A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, “Bridge of Spies” tells the story of James Donovan (Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. Screenwriters Matt Charman and Ethan Coen & Joel Coen have woven this remarkable experience in Donovan’s life into a story inspired by true events that captures the essence of a man who risked everything and vividly brings his personal journey to life. The film will be released in theaters nationwide on October 16, 2015.

When I first saw the trailer for Bridge of Spies, I knew this was a movie I wanted to see.

Cold War spy thriller? Check.

Based on true events? Great!

Directed by Spielberg? I’m in.

Starring Tom Hanks? Get me some popcorn and kaki mochi and don’t bother me for the next two hours.

It did not disappoint.

Bridge of Spies is about an actual event in the midst of the Cold War. The movie starts off with the capture of a Russian spy, Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance) in Brooklyn, New York. The government wants to give the appearance of a fair trial so they get an insurance lawyer, James Donovan (Tom Hanks), to represent him. Although he knows that this will make him look un-American, his fight to give the spy a fair trial, despite resistance from the judge, his boss, and the CIA, shows what type of American he truly is.

Despite his efforts, Abel is convicted. With the whole country out for blood, Donovan persuades the judge to not give him the death penalty because, he argues, Abel could be a bargaining chip in the future should an American get captured.

Of course, an American does get captured. Pilot Francis Powers (Austin Stowell), is shot down while on a surveillance mission. Donovan is tasked with coordinating the trade which will be done in East Berlin. Donovan must make the deal as an American citizen, with no government ties (or security) in a place that is not the safest on earth at this time in history. The Berlin wall is undergoing construction, and an American student, Frederic Pryor (Will Rogers) has recently been captured on the wrong side of it. Against the CIA’s wishes, Donovan tries to bargain for the release of both Americans in exchange for Abel.

Tom Hanks does a great job in the role of James Donovan. He is the All-American actor of our generation and was perfectly cast as the lawyer tasked with the un-American job. Mark Rylance also turns in a great, subtle performance as the captured spy. It was nice to see the bond that is formed between these two men who are so loyal to their opposing countries, as well as to discover what they individually stand for.

Bridge of Spies is a very entertaining movie. Knowing that it is based on events that actually took place makes it all the more so.

Max Review - Now in Theaters!

Max Synopsis
From Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures comes Max (Rated PG), a family action adventure from writer/director Boaz Yakin (Remember the Titans, Fresh).

A precision-trained military dog, Max serves on the frontlines in Afghanistan alongside his handler, U.S. Marine Kyle Wincott. But when things go terribly wrong on maneuvers, Kyle is mortally wounded and Max, traumatized by the loss of his best friend, is unable to remain in service.

Sent stateside, the only human he seems willing to connect with is Kyle’s teenage brother, Justin, so Max is saved when he is adopted by Kyle’s family. But Justin has issues of his own, including living up to his father’s expectations, and he isn’t interested in taking responsibility for his brother’s troubled dog. However, Max may be Justin’s only chance to discover what really happened to his brother that day on the front, and with the help of Carmen, a tough-talking young teen who has a way with dogs, Justin begins to appreciate his canine companion.

Justin’s growing trust in Max helps the four-legged veteran revert back to his heroic self, and as the pair race to unravel the mystery, they find more excitement—and danger—than they bargained for. But they each might also find an unlikely new best friend…in each other.

Max is a Belgian Malinois, who sniffs out hidden weapons in Afghanistan and works alongside Kyle, a marine. When Kyle is killed in the line of duty, Max ends up back in the states and in the care of Justin, Kyle's younger brother. He is reluctant at first to take on any responsibility, especially one that interferes with his gaming, but slowly Justin starts to care more for Max than for himself.

This is evident during a 4th of July celebration where Justin realizes what the firework noises could be doing to his PTSD-suffering dog, and he rushes home to comfort his terrified pet. Max returns the favor when he helps Justin catch the attention of his friend's cousin, Carmen. They soon get caught up in some unbelievable and sometimes dangerous adventures, especially when his older brother's shady friend returns from battle.

The relationship between Kyle and Max during the war was profound, as well as the eventual connection between Justin and Max, but the more interesting relationship to me was the one of Justin and his father. I love movies about father/son relationships and this movie, although it doesn't get too deep into it, examines this sometimes complicated bond. The former marine father, Thomas Haden Church as Ray Wincott, shows a tremendous amount of love towards his older son who is following in his footsteps serving his country overseas. His love for his younger, "slacker" son is not very obvious.

Josh Wiggins, who played Kyle, did a nice job onscreen. He played the role of the rebellious younger son to a tee. The rest of the acting was decent, but I thought Lauren Graham, who is usually terrific in everything, was too subdued in this movie. When loved ones go missing I'd expect a much bigger reaction from a mother or wife.

Of course, the real stars of the movie were the dogs who played Max. Several times the audience let out a collective "awww" when Max did something cute. The audience favorite was the old puppy footage of Max. An already touching part of the movie was made all the more so by the sight of the adorable pup.

My son really loved watching Max, especially whenever he did the "cool tricks," and despite some violent and intense scenes, he didn't get scared at all throughout the movie. Although some parts of the movie were too predictable, overall Max was an enjoyable movie (especially appealing for canine lovers and/or older kids) with some interesting story lines.

Tomorrowland Movie Review

Tomorrowland (Rated PG) is now in theaters!

Synopsis:
From Disney comes two-time Oscar® winner Brad Bird’s “Tomorrowland,” a riveting mystery adventure starring Academy Award® winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world—and them—forever.

Featuring a screenplay by “Lost” writer and co-creator Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird, from a story by Lindelof & Bird & Jeff Jensen, “Tomorrowland” promises to take audiences on a thrill ride of nonstop adventures through new dimensions that have only been dreamed of.

The film also stars Hugh Laurie as brilliant scientist David Nix, Raffey Cassidy, Tim McGraw, Judy Greer, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key and Thomas Robinson.

“Tomorrowland” is produced by Damon Lindelof, Brad Bird and Jeffrey Chernov and directed by Brad Bird, with John Walker, Brigham Taylor, Jeff Jensen and Bernard Bellew serving as executive producers. “Tomorrowland” opens in U.S. theaters on May 22, 2015.

Tomorrowland stars Britt Robertson as Casey, a science-loving girl who comes into possession of a pin which transports her to a beautiful place in the future whenever she touches it. When the pin stops working, she tracks down the person she believes can help her get back there - George Clooney's Frank.

The movie is visually beautiful. The city of the future looks stunning and fun, and I wish the movie focused more on this aspect. The acting in the movie was well done by Robertson and Clooney, as well as Hugh Laurie (scientist David Nix), Tim McGraw (Casey's father) and Raffey Cassidy (as the young recruiter, Athena).

Time travel movies will always raise logic questions. If you're lucky, the story is so engaging and the time travel anomalies so small that they don't interfere with your enjoyment of the movie. Unfortunately, this was not the case for me while watching Tomorrowland. The movie seemed to drag on and it got very preachy at times. The pro-science/creativity/artist/dreamer message of Tomorrowland is told to you in lengthy dialogue and not-so-subtle symbolism. There is also a question of elitism as the people of the future only recruit these types to be in their world.

However, I did enjoy the early flashback scene of the World's Fair where I could recognize many locations from inside Disneyland Park where the movie was filmed. They even used the "it's a small world" ride as the secret entrance into Tomorrowland. The action scenes were exciting, but it seems like I'd already seen them in the movie trailers.

The movie's message went a little over my son's head (six years old), and although I would recommend the movie for older kids, he still enjoyed the action and was in awe of the visual effects.

Tomorrowland is now in theaters.  Click here to find tickets.

Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron Review

Synopsis:
Marvel Studios presents “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) wants to create artificial intelligence (AI) and put it in his robots to help protect the planet. The AI builds his own robotic body, Ultron, and comes to the conclusion that the best way to protect the planet is to eliminate mankind.

The action in the movie is almost continuous and very intense. Some of the battle scenes were especially impressive including the opening scene where the Avengers attack a Hydra base and a later scene where two of the Avengers duke it out.

Like the first Avengers, the sequel has its comedic moments too. The party and the attempts to lift Thor's hammer before Ultron makes his entrance provided quite a few laughs.

Unlike the first movie, Avengers: Age of Ultron sheds a softer light on some of the members. We get to see the family life of one of the heroes, and we see the challenges that two Avengers face as they discover they have feelings for one another.

The best part of the movie, however, may come from someone we never see on screen. James Spader, as the voice of Ultron, does a fantastic job giving "life" to the artificial intelligence of the Avengers' ultimate foe. He goes toe to toe with the always great Downey, and makes it impossible to imagine anyone else in the role.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron is all about evolution. Evolving technology, evolving relationships, and even the group itself looks like it will be evolving. By the end of the movie, some members will be gone and new ones will take their place. The next Avenger movie will definitely have a different look to it. I can't wait.

And neither can my son.

He really enjoyed the movie, and despite intense action scenes, he was not afraid at all during the movie.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is an entertaining, action-packed film great for super hero fans of all ages.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is now in theaters.
